straddling existential dread and sheer ecstasy
Last night was the most difficult night caring for Sebastian that we’ve had to this point. The first two nights were mostly a tenuous cacophony of recently initiated parents and a newborn still at odds with the happenings of his birth day. Last night, on the otherhand, was a romp of sleeplessness as he tossed and turned and cried and fed and pooped and peed…it’s all more dramatic than it reads of course. I’m certainly beyond tired at this point and I don’t even recall the last time that I slept any more than 3 or 4 hours at one time – a stretch which lasts even before Sebastian was born. I realize this is all part of the newborn process and I’m curious as to what the next few weeks will hold – if he’ll grab on to the day/night processes with ease or if I’ll be hopping in to work half asleep (and addicted to venti light coffee frapps at Starbucks). I’m at least grateful that my baby has three months to help get our son started on the right track. If both of us had to return to work next week (or even within the month) it would only be more chaos than I could handle, that’s for sure.
I’ve started using some of the newer and cutting edge online services on the web and I have to say that I’m impressed. I’ve already signed up for a pro account on Flickr – between the unlimited storage and the ability to tag and organize in way that is at once unique and intelligible is ultimately gratifying. There are plenty of bugs that are visibile when using the service but it is still in beta (as they continually let you know) and I’m enough impressed with what’s there that they have my full attention. The other service that I’m starting to use is del.icio.us – the social bookmark manager. This service utilizes the same idea as Flickr, providing tags and categories by which to organize and share your bookmarks. While the sharing aspect is the one that is oft popularized, for me, it’s the ability to push my bookmarks into a single location online and attach metadata to them. Additionally, there are firefox plugins (which i have not yet tired) that will sync up your del.icio.us bookmarks with the app…way cool. Currently, del.icio.us says they’ll be ad driven, though I’d pay money to use such a service. I guess my only complaint about all these things is that they are all disparate services.
At some point I’ll be moving to WordPress from Textpattern. Both flickr and del.icio.us (jeez, i hate typing that) have plugins to help integrate with the popular blogging tool – additionally, the one-click install from Dreamhost doesn’t hurt either. I’ve actually used wordpress in a test on another site and was impressed. Once I get a chance, I’ll be moving this site over to use that backend.
